New York, Frank Leslie Publishing House, 1905. Wraps. Printed wraps. Single issue of this general interest magazine of both fiction and nonfiction, perhaps notable for the first two chapters of the detective/mystery story by Anna Katharine Green "The Woman in the Alcove." Heavy chipping and tearing along the fore edge, with a lengthy area of loss along the center fore edge. Mostly minor chipping and tearing along the other edges. GREEN, ANNA KATHARINE, Amethyst Box
GREEN, ANNA KATHARINE
Amethyst Box
Indianapolis, IN: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1905. Trade Edition. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. The front endpaper has generalized toning and there is an inked previous owner's name. "Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green "stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful "whodunits"." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .
